Bernie is Bald & Effective

Well, effective-ish, anyway.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t give a shout-out to Bernie Sanders, Independent Senator of Vermont, who did an old-school filibuster on the floor of the Senate yesterday, speaking for 8.5 hours, from about 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

I caught a little more than an hour of it (in the background while at my job), around hours 5-6, and goddammit, if it wasn’t riveting and educational. He railed against the tax bill compromise the whole time, discussing why $1.1 million tax break for the CEO of JP Morgan Chase is unconscionable when he can’t get his fellow Senators to cut $250 checks to wounded veterans.

Bernie spoke so well, in fact, that I had to turn it off so I could get actual work done at my job.

Bernie’s “filibuster” was more symbolic than anything else. But it had the old-school drama I like from my politics, a passionate man talking about the people. He may not be as attractive as Jimmy Stewart’s Mr. Smith (or as young as he was then), but man, he’s got energy.

His twitter feed was going throughout, if you want to check out the process/progress.

I’ve been praising Bernie for years on B&E. And I’ve been looking for a potential replacement to my Senate boyfriend Russell “Oh, So” Feingold, who was defeated in his reelection bid last month. Maybe Bernie’s my new boy.

And here he is eating cake!
