When I first saw that the ratings for Sarah Palin’s Alaska were the highest ever for any show on TLC, I was like, “Oh, for fuck’s sake.” Then I was like, “But of course, we are talking TLC.”
A left-leaning colleague at my job watched it. She watched the whole thing. She was totally seduced by it. And I was all, “What are you doing? Why are you encouraging her?”
Now, with a few hours of perspective, I think perhaps we should encourage this type of success for Sarah Palin. Maybe it’s better for all of us if she’s just a celebrity, rather than being a celebrity that we’re supposed to take seriously as a potential leader. Maybe it’s safer for the country if she’s just killing grizzly bears and wolves and polar bears and moose and Yogi bears and salmon and gay bears and destroying whatever ecosystem they’ve got up in Alaska.
All she really wants is to be the center of attention, right?
In separate but related news, Tina Fey became the youngest person to win the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. So good for her.
