Horrifying

Yesterday's Mets v. Padres game featured one of the most terrifying collisions I've ever seen. If you have a strong stomach, you can watch it here.

If you don't want to put yourself through it (I've only watched it once)... Carlos Beltran and Mike Cameron of the Mets dove for the same ball in shallow right-center field and collided head-to-face. Cameron's out for the rest of the season with a broken nose and multiple fractures in both cheeks. Beltran's having some tests done, but at least he could move right after.

Are there any old school Mets fans out there who remember back in the 80s when Mookie Wilson and Lenny Dykstra had a similarly horrifying crack up in center field at Shea? In the following off-season, Lenny was traded to Philadelphia and subsequently became one of the most feared hitters in the majors, leading the Phils to the NL pennant in 1992 or so. ...So I think yesterday's unfortunate collision is an ominous sign from the baseball Gods: It wouldn't surprise me if Cameron were moved in the off-season and then became a Gold Glove center fielder, a la Tori Hunter. What's worse, he'll probably end up playing for an NL East rival or, even more painfully, the Yankees. ...Ah, the joys of being a Met fan...
